Duplicate Content, Article Directories, Article Marketing and Google

By admin | September 20, 2008

So, 4 terms I used in title. I am damn sure you understand what I am going to talk about.

Your guess is very much right. I am going to talk about duplicate conent. Most of you know this is age old thing to hear, but there is still big confusion in mind of many webmasters on the same term “Duplicate Content”.

I take interest to write a blog post because I do offer content writing, article directory submissions and own an article directory. And all 3 things have concern with the term duplicate content.

Let me talk about all 4 terms in my title one by one.

(1) Duplicate Content: Duplicate content in simple words is the copying or original content. Copying may be within one site or sites own by one person or sites own by completely different person at different places.

So, what is the matter?

Matter is searchers found same contnet again and again for relevant serach terms which leads to annoyed search engine user. Hence, it gives poor user experice. This is a big problem for search engines,as this will leads to less search engine users. Which in its turn leads to less advertizers. Hence, less income to search engine. Search engines take action to check it, and for sure duplicated pages may get penelized.

Note the term I use may get penalized. Means penalization depends. I’ll explain you later, first let me talk about remaining 3 terms.

(2) Article Directories: Article directories have tons of articles open to take article from authers and to give article to website.

In either way duplicate content is there. i.e when author give article to article directories then that author may have published the same exact copy of article on her site plus, she may have given the same article to hundereds of other article directories. And when websites takes article from article direcotries it is for sure going to pulish stuff which can be placed under duplicate content category.

As I said above, duplicate content may leads to penalization then… why most of the article directories are NOT penalized but doing great. As big an aritcle directory is, as more duplicate content it have, but it is as hit and popular and doing good in search engines.

Hence, you found a contradiction. Duplicate content leads to penalization and duplicate content are doing great and search engines (for sure including Google)

(3) Article Marketing: This is a technique to promote site. We do submit articles to article directories in order to get more links.

So, what?? Article submitted to article directories leads to spead same article to hundreds of aritlce directories and hence a duplicate content. So, you are the cause of spreading duplicate content on web and search engine don’t want it. So what you expect the reaction of search engines?? I am sure you answered this question in your mind. :)

(4) Google: Do I need to define Google as I define first 3 terms. lol

Lets put all 4 terms together…

There are 3 bodies… (1) article directory (2) website for which article marketing is done and (3) the boss (Google)

If article marketing is done for a site then article directories will have duplicate content. And if an article is taken from article directories then site will have duplicate content. Then how Google will react and why?

NOTE: Google is not able to find the original page (first page which have original content) in most of the cases. So Google consider the popular site’s content as original in most of the cases. Don’t think that your page will be considered as the original content owner if you submit article when your own article is cached by Google. Though this is not correct many times.

Anyway, Google says… duplicate content is NOT bad until the copier is not intended to manipulate ranking or deceive Google’s users. Means.. Google have some checks to find where copier is trying to manipulate ranking.

What are those checks?? Seriously, I don’t know and no one knows. Google keeps secret and don’t speak in its own room because walls have ears. lol

Google said…If you are copying an article (content) then leave a link to original source of article. What does it mean?? It means Google want you to commit that you are the guy who copied the content. It means… you are not trying to make Google and its users fool. So, you keep your trust in google eyes.

Hence…. article directories flourish very well even when they have tons of duplicate content. But how website will flourish which is doing article marketing? I guess I have answered. No? let me repeat. Post article on website and do put link on article to page where original article is published and then submit your article to article directories. In this way… site will be declared as the original content holder and will placed as top authority and article directories will also flourish.

Now… what if you are putting an article on your site taking it from article directory?? Do give link to that article directory and if that article belongs to some other site and that site submitted their article to article directory from where you are taking that particular article, then for sure put a link to the original article holder site. In this case you can leave to link article directory.

Hence… in above discussion… one this is very much clear. Most links will be made pointing to the site which holds the original article. And original article holder will be considered as authority site for relevant keywords. So, keep writing original articles and spreading your articles to article directories.

If you are copying an article from somewhere else by giving link to it.. you are not bad guy in Google’s eye..but you don’t hold authority position too.

Hence…. let article directories do the job of holding duplicate content and keep your site holder of original content.

I owns article directory and that directory is inside my site. i.e article directory is one section of my site, then what should be my stunt? Keep duplicates or keep site holder of original content?

I’ll answer both. Original content on all other sections and have article directory duplicate content (for sure giving link to original content holder site). Why?? Do I need to answer? I guess YES. Because you might be thinking better one is to keep being authority site rather than being copying site but trust worthy. You said it right. But all above things are not only the factors which matters to rank in Google.

Google gives more weight to those sites which have more content and good content. Hence, my stunt will be…Keep adding original content to my complete site (including article directory) plus keep articles which I think are good and give link to original article holder from those pages.

I think I have talked much about duplicate content. I’ll like to see your views. Thanks.
